Hi Reader! Happy Fall! 🍁 How’s it going so far? Are you reaching for the cozier clothes? Me, I’m in comfort mode. Last week, in a fit of nostalgia, I made pudding from scratch. Not from a box! I feel very accomplished. (LMK if you want the recipe.) Another comfort-seeking thing I've been doing is to deep dive on whatever song is playing on repeat in my brain. Now, the jukebox in my brain is not that sophisticated. It's quite literal. For instance, this week, the song has been the Queen/Bowie collab “Under Pressure” after an attendee at last week’s Drop-in Lab described feeling under lots of pressure due to family and work demands. Feeling under pressure, while caused by very real circumstances in this person’s life, isn’t literal. There isn’t an external physical presence actually squeezing her body or adding weight. Even so, movements and actions, even sense of time, can become restricted. Things can feel heavy or tight. Have you ever been under pressure and felt it in your body? It can seem inescapable when you don't have full control over the circumstances. Now, you could treat this as a mindset problem. “Just don’t internalize things.” Easier said than done. Deciding that something doesn't affect you doesn’t always honor the truth of the situation. Or, you could knuckle down and make it work, but that usually comes at a high cost of energy. It isn’t sustainable. Here’s another way: Learn to untangle your habitual responses from the stimuli. Enter Integrative Alexander Technique (IAT). This is the actual “how” that allows you to update your responses to outside pressures. It’s mind and body working in elegant unity to help you notice what’s happening and decide what to do next. When you learn to use IAT in your life, you learn to:
Coordination and physical ease don’t have to go out the window when the pressure gets turned up. Oh, and that Lab attendee who inspired Queen on repeat? She just shared that when a feeling of pressure arose this week, she was able to notice where in her body she’d been bracing to meet it, and to invite movement though her whole system to not get stuck in that pattern. She’s changing the pattern with a quick thought and an invitation to movement. This Fall, take the time to join a Group Drop-in Lab or book a Private Coaching session. This small investment of time pays big dividends, giving you skills you can take with you in your beautiful, complex life. Looking forward to seeing you, Crispin

Hi Reader! How are you doing this Fall? I don’t know about you, but I’m getting a lot of voicemails and texts. The bot brigade wants my attention. And for me to settle that mysterious tax bill. Let’s talk about using our attention with intention. One of the things clients new to Integrative Alexander Technique often say is, “Oh, this is about being intentional.” Yes, it is. And to get there, you first train your attention to figure out what’s actually happening. Finding clarity between what's...
Hi Reader! How is your summer shaping up? We spent a muggy week in Woodstock, NY, a lovely small town with a big reputation. The close heat brought me right back to childhood. Ahh, this is what summer feels like. We can’t possibly get anything done. Productivity must go on pause. How do you feel about productivity? I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, it’s necessary. In my small business, I’m always asking, What’s the most effective strategy? What’s the best use of my time? What’s the ROI...
Hi Reader! I guess I planted dahlias? Usually in Spring, I plant pretty annuals, knowing that they’ll die of natural causes and I won’t be to blame. Turns out I challenged that pattern last year by putting in a perennial. Thanks for the delightful surprise, last-year self! Just for fun, what joy-giving little thing can you do for your future self? Get on the library waitlist for that bestseller? Book a spa day in October? Order the cozy blanket that will take 3 months to arrive? One...
